DANUM VALLEY CONSERVATION AREA

Step into a realm of unparalleled natural wonder as you venture into the Danum Valley Conservation Area (DVCA) - a sprawling 43,800 hectares Class I (Protection) Forest Reserve, Sabah's last strongholds of undisturbed lowland dipterocarp forest. It was gazetted on February 1, 1995 under the Sabah Forestry Enactment 1968. DVCA is renowned for its remarkable biodiversity and serves as a vital conservation area for numerous plant and animal species.  Estimated to be around 130 million years old, DVCA is one of the world's oldest and richest lowland tropical forest. With the richness and abundance flora and fauna, it is an ideal natural "laboratory" for research on ecological interactions and understand the functioning of a pristine rainforest ecosystem.

Danum Valley Conservation Area is primarily inhabited by various species of plants and animals that thrive in the rainforest ecosystem. Among its notable inhabitants is the giant Yellow Meranti Tree (Shorea faguetiana), which gained distinction in 2019 as the tallest tropical tree ever recorded, reaching a towering height of 100.8 meters. This sanctuary resides an extensive variety of over 120 species of mammals including 10 species of primates such as the critically-endangered Orang Utan and larger mammals include the Bornean pygmy elephant, Banteng, Bornean sun bear, Bornean gibbons, Binturong and numerous deer species. All five species of Borneo's wild cats can also be found in DVCA such as the rarely sighted Borneo bay cat, the elusive Sunda clouded leopard and marbled cat, the endangered flat-headed cat, and Borneo's own species of leopard cat - the Sunda leopard cat.

The conservation area also serves as a habitual grounds to 72 reptiles, 56 amphibians, more than 40 fishes and an impressive assemblage of more than 340 species of birds; including the Red-Crowned Barbet, Bornean bristlehead, 8 species of pitta including the elusive Blue-banded pitta and all 8 species of hornbills found in Borneo. In essence, the Danum Valley Conservation Area thrives as a treasure trove of biodiversity, providing a haven for a multitude of plant and animal species, many of which are unique and at risk of extinction.
