DERAMAKOT FOREST RESERVE
Sprawling across 55,507 hectares of mixed dipterocarp forest, Deramakot boasts an astounding 75% of Sabah’s mammal species. Notably, Deramakot stands as the world's longest Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified tropical forest since 1997, allocating 10% for conservation and 90% for sustainable logging. Located 240 km from Kota Kinabalu and 190 km from Sandakan, Deramakot stands out as one of the few destinations where visitors can encounter all five Bornean cat species, including the Sunda Clouded Leopard, Bornean Bay Cat, Leopard Cat, Marbled Cat, and Flat Headed Cat. The reserve is also home to eight species of Hornbills and iconic wildlife such as the Bornean Orangutans, Northern Grey Bornean Gibbons, Bornean Pygmy Elephants, and Banteng (wild cattle).
While most visitors opt for our 3 days and 4 days tours, some dedicated wildlife enthusiasts may extend their visit to a week or longer, especially those in pursuit of the perfect shot of a clouded leopard. The experience kicks off with a 2-hour night safari on the arrival day, allowing guests to acquaint themselves with the incredible nocturnal wildlife. Subsequent full days in Deramakot involve 7 hours of 4x4 wildlife safaris, complemented by opportunities to explore the surrounding trails on foot. In essence, Deramakot Forest Reserve promises an enriching and unforgettable experience for nature enthusiasts and wildlife aficionados alike, offering a rare glimpse into the heart of Borneo's vibrant ecosystem.
